Synopsis

Are you an artist or filmmaker with work on VUCAVU?
Are you a creator interested in improving the accessibility of your work, and not sure where to start?

In this presentation, VUCAVU.com’s Digital Programming Intern, Stephanie Poruchnyk-Butler, will discuss methods for incorporating accessibility materials in the distribution, marketing and online exhibition of your work. She will share tips and tricks, such as how and why to write alt text and image descriptions for your promotional materials and press kits, and how to use free software to create captions and subtitles. She will also update the community on exciting updates and changes that have been integrated into the VUCAVU platform.

A note from the presenter: “I (Stephanie) am able-bodied, sighted, hearing individual sharing research related to my position as Digital Programming Intern at VUCAVU. When addressing accessibility, it is important to refer to D/disabled folks, pay them for their time and prioritize their needs. My intention in hosting this discussion is to share my knowledge and experience in distribution, marketing and exhibition of moving image art, and to encourage artists, filmmakers and creatives to improve the accessibility of their work, as well as share updates and changes to VUCAVU that have been made over the last few months. The purpose of this event is to encourage folks to reconsider their promotional materials, deliverables and grant applications in a way that makes them more accessible to a wider audience.”

This was a virtual, live event hosted on Zoom on March 22, 2022. Because of budget constraints, there is no ASL interpretation, however a closed captions are available through the video player. Stephanie does a visual description of herself and the slides while she presents.
