Synopsis

Working with the visual language of the rotating billboard, this video work proposes an audio-visual portrait of the aka art collective. The title plays with a colonial theory that suggests that the name “Canada” originated when Iberian explorers, having explored the northern part of the American continent and unable to find gold and silver, wrote “El Cabo de Nada” (Cape Nothing), acá nada, (nothing here) in their maps. The video is inspired by aka’s interest in interrogating how subjectivities, political stances, and modes of social engagement formed elsewhere morph, adapt and contribute to our positioning within the local, cultural landscape of Vancouver.
