Synopsis

The Weaver's Circle is a short documentary film portrait of an environmental artist. Working in the downtown eastside of Vancouver, Sharon has left the world of galleries and conventional art materials to forge an ethical art-practice and strengthen local community in an area fractured by poverty and redevelopment. Combining traditional First Nations and European weaving methods to repurpose invasive plant material and "green waste" culled from city parks, her Urban Weaver Project rethinks the idea of public art. The resulting installations, built by diverse residents of the area, are allowed to weather and decay over time, as a reminder of the cycle of nature and to challenge our unsustainable consumer culture and destructive attitudes towards the environment.
