CURATOR TALK: CURATING IN THE DIGITAL AGE

Please join us for a curator talk with Nicole Gingras, Ariane Plante and Erandy Vergara to be held at Groupe Intervention Vidéo (#105 - 4001 rue Berri St., Montreal) on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 from 6:30PM-7:30PM. 

As part of this years Transhumances - On The Other Side series, this curator talk will explore the theme of curating film, video and media art in the digital age. Our panel brings together curators Nicole Gingras, Ariane Plante and Erandy Vergara to discuss their individual approaches to curation. In addition, the panel will examine how curators utilize existing Canadian film/video collections in their work while considering the challenges and opportunities for film/video curatorial practices with initiatives such as VUCAVU. How does access to digital tools and archives impact a curators' professional considerations, an artists' rights, exhibition planning and/or the dissemination of media art? 

This round table is co-presented with Groupe Intervention Video and will be moderated by Jacquelyn Hébert, VUCAVU's Community and Program Manager. This event is free and open to the public, and will conclude with a question and answer period. Light refreshments will be served.

ABOUT THE CURATORS    
 

ARIANE PLANTE
Trained in anthropology, Ariane Plante has worked freelance for a dozen years in the cultural and artistic community, notably as curator, programmer, author, project manager, and artistic advisor. A self-taught artist, she also develops a professional practice in media and visual arts. She has received grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec as an artist and curator, and from Première Ovation, as an artist, author (screenwriting) and curator. In 2012, Ariane Plante started Klondike – décor sonore pour patinoire, an independent curatorial project in audio art. She also created Occupation trouble, a program of video works from the La Bande Vidéo media library. In 2015, she was named main curator of the 2016, 2017 and 2018 editions of Mois Multi, the Quebec international multidisciplinary and electronic arts festival. She also programmed an Art and Exploration section at the Quebec City Film Festival in 2017. Her writing has notably been published during an exhibition at Oboro, and in the ETC media magazine. Since 2018, she has been acting as a curator and consultant for the development of an exhibition space dedicated to digital visual arts at the Grand Théâtre de Québec, and is also developing various independent exhibition projects. She lives in Montréal, and works in Quebec City and Montréal.

ERANDY VERGARA
Erandy Vergara curates, investigates, reads and writes about contemporary and media art. Her main research interests include feminism, global art histories, curatorial studies, and postcolonialism with a particular interest in recent remix cultures, the strengths and downfalls of science and technology, virtual reality and artificial intelligence, and the aesthetics and ethics of participation. She earned an MA from Concordia University and a PhD in Art History at McGill University. Among her recent exhibitions are Speculative Cultures: A Virtual Reality Art Exhibition, in collaboration with curator Tina Sauerländer (Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Gallery, Parsons School of Design, New York, 2019) and Art et intelligence artificielle : Explorations artistiques in Montréal (Printemps numérique, Montréal, 2019).

NICOLE GINGRAS
Nicole Gingras works in the field of contemporary, media and sound art as a researcher, curator, author, and independent publisher. The exhibitions and programs she has curated, the publications under her direction, and the seminars she has conducted deal with such notions as time, the creative process, traces, listening, and memory. She has written extensively on the moving image as well as on photography, sound and kinetic art. 

Her most recent projects, in 2019, include an exhibition of Monique Moumblow’s recent works (VOX, centre de l’image contemporaine, Montreal); Les mondes [the worlds], an important monographic exhibition of animator and visual artist Diane Obomsawin, at Expression in Saint-Hyacinthe; a monographic exhibition of Canadian video pioneer Chantal duPont, Corps-mémoire, une conversation [body-memory, a conversation], at Agora Hydro-Quebec in Montreal. Over the years, she has collaborated with various artist-run centres, galleries, museums and festivals in Canada and abroad, organizing exhibitions and web art projects, videos and performances, writing, and programming films, including experimental cinema at the International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA) since 2003. In 2012 she received the Hnatyshyn Foundation Award for Curatorial Excellence in Contemporary Art. Nicole Gingras lives in Montreal.
