Bio

Madeleine Olnek is a writer and director who honed her skills in downtown New York City venues with over twenty produced plays, all comedies. She is one of the authors of A Practical Handbook for the Actor (foreword by David Mamet), a widely used acting textbook. She is a graduate of Columbia Film School, where she was awarded the William Goldman Screenwriting Fellowship and the Adrienne Shelly Award for Best Female Director. Her films include the Sundance shorts Hold Up and Countertransference, as well as her debut feature, the Gotham Award Nominee Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same (Sundance 2011), which was termed “hilarious” by The Hollywood Reporter. Her new feature film, The Foxy Merkins, was an Independent Spirit Award Nominee and was an official selection for Sundance 2014.
