Bio

As a Dakota/Anishinaabe and Irish/Belgian mixed contemporary artist and mother from Long Plain First Nation, Kristin Flattery is deeply committed to the treaties, land claims, identity, and what the next 150+ years has in store for Kanata. To explore and learn a cultural Identity once denied to my maternal family, becomes an act of resilience and decolonization. Through a variety of media, such as performance art, video instillation, and photography, she explores such concepts as: hybridity, identity, Indigenous Sovereignty, and decolonization. Throughout her artistic practice, she believes healing from trauma, and using art as a means of expression and communication, are both meaningful and necessary throughout. Flattery utilizes decolonizing art practices, by using her body as a vehicle of expression, to dismantle Eurocentric colonial stereotypes and reclaim traditional Indigenous knowledge.
