Works Cup of Sadness 2000 Elvira Finnigan A shirt is unbuttoned revealing a cup filling with drops of water. A closer view presents reflected images that suggest chaos, war, death, sorrow and loss. The shirt is buttoned up, hiding the images. The sound carries on. Path 2007 Elvira Finnigan Footage of the Hampton Court Palace maze, established in 1689 and perhaps the most famous existing maze in the world, is contrasted with Anishinabe petroforms found in Manitoba’s Whiteshell area. The English, mannered, controlled hedges are designed to limit sight; the rocks of the Canadian Shield, arranged in patterns of turtles, snakes and humans, were created to inspire teaching and healing. Finnigan interrogates the wisdom of the colonizing versus the colonized culture. Mater 2004 Elvira Finnigan The camera mounted on a dolly moves through Mater, an installation of mother and child figures by Elvira Finnigan. Jitterbugs 1999 Elvira Finnigan Jitterbugs is a short video about masks of comedy and tragedy, mounted on wind-up toys, as they dance to old-time jitterbug music and vie for the spotlight.
