Kate Craig was born in 1947 in Victoria. She studied at Dalhousie University and the University of Victoria. Her work is important to the development of performance and video art in Canada and it is included in public collections across the country. Craig’s attention to the surface of objects, be it organic or artificial, is a recurrent element in her work, which explores the social character of identity and the cultural infatuation with images of the female body. Craig was one of the founders of the Western Front (1973), where she initiated the artist-in-residence program (1977) and was instrumental in spearheading the media arts program, along with producing many video works for visiting artists. Craig was involved in performance art, mail art, and video production internationally. Her video work Delicate Issue won the Canadian Video Open (1979). Craig was a member of the Ettes, Luxe Radio Players, the Peanettes, and the Canadian Shadow Players. In addition, her work has been shown at venues throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Craig passed away in 2002.
