Bio

Kirouac is a Metis Winnipeg-based interdisciplinary artist. Her videos test the comfort levels and preconceived ideas of audiences globally. She has received multiple grants from Manitoba Arts Council, Canada Council and National Film Board, residences at The Banff Center and exhibited in Canada, Europe and the US.

Canadian Time 2 builds upon a 2006 Kirouac performance underwent at the Rijksakademie (Netherlands) where she painted time signatures on the wall in the hours awaiting the results of her program eligibility. In 2011, she translates a similar, yet more pronounced set of circumstances in a performance executed at the Receiver Festival in Charleston, SC. This short film combines two opposite contexts of social interactions, one being life-size rock em' sock em’ boxing footage at a seedy cowboy bar, and the other a refined tea party for two set against the dramatic fall forest.

Scuffers

Scuffers captures London (Ontario) girls interpreting military fashion through the filters of suburbia; subconsciously undermining the “advances” of feminist art. Militarism exists in uniformity and Scuffers presents these girls and environments according to their own internalized aesthetic systems. Standing outside the territory of stylists, paparazzi, and professional art crews, Scuffers illustrates the trickle-down effect, and the failed critique of military imagery.

From celebration to squabbles, food serves as a microcosm for the push/pull of family dynamics. Coming from a passionate French-Canadian restaurant family, Kirouac’s experiences of familal relations have been continually filtered through the ubiquitous, yet intimate, act of cooking. In Don’t Go Away, Kirouac combines these histories and emotions into a mediated conversation with her deceased father “Fernie”.
