"Set in a shared home for single mothers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the film Medanit explores the every-day life of Aster Assefa, a twenty-three year old, visually impaired mother. When Aster is confronted with her daughter’s wish to see a photograph of her father, she remembers that it was he and not her, who named the child Bethlehem. Drawing on a wealth of folklore, songs and stories, Aster realizes that her daughter is her guide, her eyes. Breaking with her past and looking forward, she decides to rename her daughter Medanit, the Amharic word for medicine and cure."
