The stairs in front of the Guigues Street School in Ottawa were the site of an incident in 1916, commonly referred to as la Guerre des épingles. This act of rebellion by a few courageous women ensured that I was able to attend school in my father's tongue. Ironically, a small chain and gate forbids entry to this staircase but I continue to tell my stories in French.
